Siete Leguas Añejo Tequila

Siete Leguas Añejo Tequila

If it were cheaper, it would be mostly fine. But it isn’t, and I feel silly paying so much for a study in restraint.

Rhum Barbancourt 8

Rhum Barbancourt 8

We've talked about aged rums, and we've talked about agricole rums. Here's one that neatly splits the difference between the two styles.

Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum

Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum

An affordable and quality-made rum that doesn't need to bludgeon you with sugar to get its point across. A nice change!

Redemption Bourbon

Redemption Bourbon

Redemption is fine. Not fine as in “a fine spirit,” but “fine” in the sense of being perfectly adequate on all levels without ever managing to astound.

Riazul Tequila Anejo

Riazul Tequila Anejo

So, if you're convinced you can pretty much close your eyes and imagine what a tequila tastes like, have I got a curve ball for you.

There's a glut of good rums on the market that lie beyond most of the familiar names. Here's one more that's shelfworthy.

Evan Williams White Label

Evan Williams White Label

Evan Williams' White Label is most everything good about bourbon. It's buttery, sweet, cheap, and enjoyable enough to have every day. It's one-note, sure, but it's a good note.

Oak Cross

Oak Cross

A direct hit when it comes to a company telling you what they want to do, then going out and doing exactly that. If you've never heard of Compass Box, start here.

Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon

Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon

Brash, aggressive, and as subtle as a punch to the mouth. All that said, Wild Turkey 101 is a well-made bourbon and is totally worthy of a purchase even for a sissy boy like myself.

Kirk and Sweeney 23-Year Rum

Kirk and Sweeney 23-Year Rum

Aged rum can be stupidly cheap. However, an age statement of more than two decades carries some hefty expectations, regardless of price. In this respect alone the Kirk and Sweeney falls short.

Lot 40 Canadian Rye

Lot 40 Canadian Rye

Laughed at Canadian whisky, did you? Thought the category could aspire to no better than Black Velvet? Well, buy this, and drink this. Never has it been so wonderful to be so utterly wrong.

Deanston 12 Scotch Whisky

Deanston 12 Scotch Whisky

Be warned: sometimes "craft" products in the booze world are about as similarly uninspiring as cable-knit iPhone caddies, overpriced essential oils, or rocks painted like sleeping cats.   Overall Rating: ★☆☆

Don Felix Añejo Tequila

Don Felix Añejo Tequila

A stupendous tequila that most have never heard of. If you've never had a "good" tequila you could enjoy neat and want your mind blown, this should be a mandatory starting point.

Glenlivet 15 French Oak Reserve

Glenlivet 15 French Oak Reserve

A lot of people (unfairly) pass over the entire Glenlivet range figuring the distillery is too big to be good. Those people would be missing out on the 15.
